Finally a black metal band from Finland that uses its native language to express themselfs. Besides not understaning the lyrics or song names I didn’t find many English words in the booklet. As if they wouldn’t know how to speak the language which I doubt very much. Ajattara is the band around Paisi Koskinen who calls himself ‘Ruoja’ (ex-Amorphis, Shape Of Despair) that with ‘Tyhjyys’ released their 3rd album shortly after their previous one ‘Kuolema’. From the very first time a heard the record playing in the background of a metal store I was convinced that this was worth buying. Besides that it doesn’t have the regular black/death sound it also portrays an overall dark and horror like atmosphere. Ruoja sings in a very harsh way and together with the Finnish language it sometimes made shivers run over my body. While some people complain about the tempo being to slow for black or death metal I am very pleased with this slower more interesting way of playing. It is much more bombastic this way. You also have to ask yourselves how many more bands do we need that plays regular mindless fast-tempo black/death metal? Not that I don’t like that style I just believe originality has almost faded away in the BM genre. When comparing with the previous albums not much has changed and that is a slight disappointment. Ajattara has the tendency to keep repeating itself. Also when comparing different songs on this album they sometimes sound so similar because the same chords, riffs and keyboards are used only in a different order. The music is without a doubt very different from when Koskinen sang with Amorphis, he wanted to make more brutal music which he did. The artwork, as usual is excellent and also much darker this time (I am still trying to figure out what it is about). This album is anything but groundbreaking, it is just plain good but short music.
