REVIEW: Akercocke - The Goat Of Mendes Peaceville Records, 2001
5/10
Akercocke - The Goat Of Mendes - cover art AKERCOCKE formed in early '97. From the beginning they mixed down-tuned classic death metal riffing with the discordant and off the wall riffing that bands like Killing Joke and Voivod use. Add to that the Satanic lyrical content and strong and the quite unique -surely for this type of music- stage presence and they had the press and the fans taking notice of them very soon. (They are wearing suits since '98 when they started playing regularly at venues like the infamous -and now defuncked- Devil's Church club in Islington in London. According to the band this stage presence, which is seemingly at odds with the music, reflectes their extreme discipline). The full-length debut album CD Rape of the Bastard Nazarene was released in early 1999 on their own Goat of Mendes label. The disc earned them instant respect and recognision from Terrorizer Magazine. They were voted Best Unsigned Band, awarded their release Album of the Month (first time ever for a self-financed release) and had a two-page feature. With all these going on for them, it was a matter a time before the band would get signed to an establilshed label. Peaceville signed them and released Goat Of Mendes. Not surprisingly the band delivered a Black Metal formula that once more was met with the approval of the press and the fans. Terrorizer Magazine went as far as putting AKERCOCKE on the cover of their magazine. Personally the whole vibe (and the promotion and general development) of this band reminds me to an extent of the noise that was going on several years ago when Cradle of Filth were putting out their first releases and were producing merchandise that was aiming to shock the puritans. Musically though in my opinon they definitely don't deliver the goods the way that C.O.F do. At this moment their merchandise is more "eye catching" that their music is "ear catching". I cannot yet recommend their work to the fans of this type of music I am afraid.
