Having three solid albums under their belt, the suit wearing British extreme metalers Akercocke have carried over some serious momentum upon the release of their latest opus, Words That Go Unspoken Deeds That Go Undone. Technically combining death and black metal, along with some progressive tendencies and electronic touches, the outfit has really carved their own nitch in the extreme metal world. While certainly other bands out there have competently combined different styles of metal, there is something about these guys that separates them from the pack. Their music is intelligently written, melodic at times, but at its core brutally dark and most certainly evil. Words That Go Unspoken Deeds That Go Undone pretty much continues where 2003’s Choronzon record left off. While retaining the heaviness of their previous records, the band shows a tendency toward expanding on their past accomplishments.
Describing the sound of Akercocke is really a challenging task, but I think the key factor to recognize is their ability to be effectively diverse. Starting with the vocals for example, Jason Mendonca shows an utmost versatility, not only rotating between death metal growls and black metal shrieks, but also showcasing some spine tingling clean vocals. The music itself correlates with the vocals in the sense that it is always changing. As I mentioned before, the core sound is a mix of death and black metal, but that is only the beginning. There are so many different things going on here, from insane guitar solos and drumming to horrifying sound bytes and electronic passages. What makes it all work though is the way Akercocke is able to effortlessly harness everything within each song. The musicianship found on this album, as on their past efforts, is top notch. Guitars, drums, and keyboards all contribute an essential piece to the pie, which as a final product is an exceptional creation of artistry.
In terms of actual songs on this record, it’s really hard to single out one or two in particular. If you find yourself liking the opening song (and you are going to), chances are, you will like the full album. However it is probably noteworthy to mention the song “Shelter from the Sand”, clocking in at over ten minutes, is definitely the most ambitious and experimental track you will find. All in all this is just another classy release from one of the upper echelon, extreme metal bands on the planet right now. If you have not checked these guys out yet, you really need to do so, and Words That Go Unspoken Deeds That Go Undone is a fine place to start.
