REVIEW: Akira Kajiyama & Joe Lynn Turner - Fire Without Flame AOR Heaven, 2006
7.5/10
Akira Kajiyama & Joe Lynn Turner - Fire Without Flame - cover art This album from the noted Japanese guitarist Akira Kajiyama was released in Japan late last year but now AOR Heaven brings it to Europe as well where it will surely be appreciated by many fans of classic hard rock. The problem with modern day bands who wish to continue the path enlightened by the giants fro the past is however that it often becomes formulaic and much of the feeling from the glory days is lost because of sterile productions and a copycat sense. Much of these obstacles have been removed on "Fire Without Flame" which is an unusually warm and dynamic production, truely refreshing in this day and age when producers often ruin recordings. The lingering "been there, done that" notion can not be extinguished entirely but the solid song writing from Kajiyama and the relaxed, comfortable singing from the former Rainbow and Deep Purple frontman Joe Lynn Turner still make this a worthy release in the end. These two talented musicians have worked together in the past and the chemistry is there. High quality melodic and passionate hard rock; even the gripping ballad "Heart Against Heart" managed to touch me although I must admit I pretty much reside in an emotional maelstrom at the moment.
