Alarum are veterans on the Aussie metal scene already, having formed in 1992. Their debut "Fluid Motion" from 1999 was a complex potpourri where a wide range of musical influences had to share space. In 2002 they produced a demo recording, many of whose songs appear on this Willowtip debut in one form or another. "Eventuality" is a complex potpourri where a wide range of musical influences have to share space. Then what is different this time around? Nothing and everything I would say. It is true that they still owe much of their craft to the pioneers of our time such as Atheist, Watchtower and Dream Theater but they have allowed themselves to expand their musical visions even further and developed their song writing to become more intricate and mature. Something that has been part of Alarum's personal style since long is the occasional suggestive ambient passages which are to be found on this album as well and it is a rather unconventional element that I really appreciate. The individual skills within this band are not far from exceptional but although the vocal performance (ranging from clean to growling) is decent enough it is the most obvious weakness that comes to mind. The constant fluctuation of jazz fusion shifts becomes slightly tedious once in a while and Alarum is definitely not a band who offer us easy listening. Their music demands a great deal of effort and attention from the listener to really get into but that is often the case with quality art of any kind, not solely music.
