Aussie rockers Alchemist have been around since the early 90's, and by this double disc release they sum up their career before signing to Relapse Records in the year 2000. Never having heard the band before listening to these records I had no idea what to expect. Musically the band is somewhere between metal and psychedelic 70's rock. What is quickly evident is that the peaks on this records are quite high, but it also has its lows. This is however far from unexpected, since some of the tunes are from way back in 1991. Judging from this release they have evolved quite a bit by the years. If I was a huge fan of Alchemist this release would probably be quite exciting, now it just makes me wish I was reviewing their later releases instead. If you're a fan of creative metal with Pink Floydish influences you should check this band out, but a qualified guess is that you should go for one of the more fresher releases like Austral Alien released in 2003. Embronics makes me want to hear more of the band, but by itself it does not reach all the way. At times it's brilliant, but as a whole it feels more like a collectors item than an actual album. Now I'm gonna go see if it's worth buying their more recent albums. Cheers.
