REVIEW: Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge Napalm Records, 2008
9.5/10
Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge - cover art Easily one of the most exciting projects of late to grace the world of extreme music, the very conception of pirate metal was enough to shiver my timbers with anticipation. If the badass band name and album title didn’t get the job done (c’mon, Captain Morgan’s Revenge? brilliance), then the badass artwork surely will. So this is all well and good in an on-paper, cosmetic sort of way, but how does the actual product stack up to the lofty (at least in my mind, being the first true pirate metal band I’ve ever encountered) expectations? Let me put it this way: I would gladly maraud anything, even a village of puppies with cancer, for this album; it’s everything I hoped it would be, which is quite a rarity these days. Epic sweeping keyboards overlay the nautical musical mayhem as stories of treasure, adventure, wenches and mead are belted out by Christopher Bowes in hilarious Pirate-accented fashion. There’s really no way to bash this album, as it’s just so damn consistent in it’s delivery, power, and, let’s be honest, hilarity; lyrics such as “With the power of ale, he could not fail! Sail into battle! Glory and metal!” exemplify the spirit of the whole thing quite accurately, while songs such as Nancy the Tavern Wench, Wenches and Mead, and Captain Morgan’s Revenge are new favorite drinking songs for my friends and I. The most telling factor to the appeal of this band is that even my friends who don’t like metal, even those who swear by hip-hop, have been asking me to burn this for them. My only hope is that they don’t let their gimmick get the best of them and become a one-trick pony (anyone else hear the new Dragonforce album?) All hail Alestorm! Buy or die, bitches!
