REVIEW: All In Vain - The Backside Of Humanity (demo) Self-financed, 2001
6/10
All In Vain - The Backside Of Humanity (demo) - cover art All In Vain was formed in 1997 by former members of the north Italian thrash metal band Lost Child. This promo / demo cd was released in November 2001 in co-operation with the metal shop Marrakesh Music in Modena. Since then they have been joined by a keyboard player but he does not appear on this cd. Influenced by the melodic Swedish way of death metal they added this sound to their thrash metal roots and the resulting mix was a success in their home country with good reviews from many media. This demo cd is actually quite nice but it bothers me a little that the At The Gates influences are so very obvious, at times they could even be accused of ripping straight off. Vocals, melodies and song structures in general are very similar to those of the Gothenburg legends but they have at least managed to lighten their sound up with some thrash metal riffing as well. The only track that made a lasting impression was "Revelation" where some beautiful melodies á la early In Flames show up and also some female vocals. This is unfortunately the only song where they show some own identity. If you are an At The Gates worshipper you would probably want to check these guys out but otherwise you might be disappointed. All in all, a decent recording.
