REVIEW: Altaria - Invitation Metal Heaven, 2003
7.5/10
Altaria - Invitation - cover art The Finnish melodic metal band Altaria was formed in the year 2000 as a project but became a real band quite soon. After two demos which already caused quite a lot of positive response, now we have their debut album "Invitation" featuring some interesting band members like Jani Liimatainen (Sonata Arctica) and Emppu Vuorinen (Nightwish) on guitar as well as vocalist Jouni Nikula (Requiem). The debut album was recorded at Sonic Pump Studios, produced and mixed by Nino Laurenne (Thunderstone) and mastered at Finnvox Studios by Mika Jussila. Altaria play a melodic metal / 80s melodic rock-style and is obviously very guitar-orientated. Songs like "Innocent", "Fire & Ice" or "History Of Times To Come" are good examples of how great melodies and especially Jouni's strong operatic vocals - which can't really be found that often in this genre - fit together. "Invitation" is throughout a great debut album and I can't wait to hear the follow-up which includes Taage Laiho (Kilpi) as the new vocalist. After all this album doesn't stand above other albums of this genre. It could have been better, especially if you have some high expectations when you hear about a line-up like this. There is a little lack of originality on this album, too, but I'm sure they can make it better next time.
