The music from the 80s seems to have had a huge impact on today’s metal scene. Bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Iron Maiden have not only influenced many current metal bands but also set milestones in music history. Therefore, it’s no wonder that some bands still play that typical 80s sound. Well, Altaria cannot be compared to the aforementioned bands because they have a softer and more rock oriented attitude but once in a while you can hear some very typical heavy metal riffs. The first few notes of “Disciples” actually remind me a lot of Nightwish but overall Altaria doesn’t sound as epic even though there are some slight epic (or shall I say 80s) elements to be found, for example in songs like “Abyss of Twilight” and “Crucifix”. The album features mostly mid-tempo songs and one wonderful ballad that I liked a lot despite its partly cheesy outcome. I have to say though that a power metal approach might benefit their sound a lot since the songs get boring after a while due to the mid-tempo speed. Overall, I would say that the 4 Finns of Altaria do their job well: the clean vocals sound powerful but don’t dominate the song. The songs are catchy and if you need some softer tunes you will surely be satisfied. But since melodic rock/metal is not everyone’s taste no matter how well it is done I can only recommend this band to those who are – what a surprise- into 80s rock.
