Here we have a valiant three-song demo by a Sicilian quartet, thankfully produced not like a demo (or by Sicilians) at all. It’s performed astonishingly well and crisply mixed by the band itself in a manner that defies any notion of amateur status. The music itself isn’t original by any means: just meat-and-potatoes traditional ‘80s metal with thrash adornments, and feel free to reverse that combo at will. But man, every riff is set to stun, every lead break provides meaningful texture and shading, and the band keeps things spry, never going too fast for headbangability. It’s all the right things about commercially viable metal: hooks, choruses, solos that go somewhere, and it all comes to a big crash when neutered by some of the dullest vocals this side of J. Mascis. Guitarist Antonino Lo Monaco can do many things well, like play the six-string, write songs and cobble shoes (I swear I made up the last one), but singing just isn’t one of them. These would-be anthems are just screaming for a bit more, uhh, screaming, drama, what-have-you, not the semi-nasal groans that pass for euphony here. I’ll even forego criticisms of the usual Boot Country problems with syntax and grammar, just as long as they find someone to belt out these and all future tunes with the mid- to high-register gusto this fine band deserves. Andiamo!
