Wound Creations is the debut album from Finnish death metalers, Amoral. Having previously released a couple of demos, the band from Helsinki released their first full-length album in 2004. After listening to this for awhile, I have been trying to pinpoint their sound and it’s proven to be a difficult task. The sound is quite mature for a debut, as it blends the sounds of Swedish melodic death metal with traces of brutal death metal. In fact the more I listen to it the harder it is for me to believe this is a debut. The majority of these songs are pretty complex— containing multiple riffs with various speeds and tempo changes. There are even 2 tunes that are a whopping Opeth-like eight plus minutes! For the most part though the material does not come across as bland. While there are flashes of brutality and melody, the band does a good job of balancing the two together. There are also some progressive elements that tend to remind me of latter era Death.
After a nice melodic intro, the opening riff for the second song “Atrocity Revolution” comes in and hits home pretty hard. This is not the most brutal band you will ever hear but this stuff is pretty pummeling because it seems to come at you in many directions. The characteristics found here are fairly reminiscent of most of the work on the album. The chugging riffs are choppy, sharp, and will have you headbanging. There are interludes filled with catchy guitar work and some really tight drumming. In fact overall, the drumming on this album really stands out. The deep growling vocals are in the vein of old school Florida death metal. The production on the disc also is pretty good as everything is really clear and makes for a solid listen. Before forewarned though this is death metal for the patient ear. There are many subtle things going on that may take a few listens to grasp. The second to last song called “Languor Passage” is a really cool instrumental track, which showcases some nice melody’s and shows the versatility of the band. Overall this is a promising debut of a band that could really come into their own on their next couple of records.
