REVIEW: Amorphis - Am Universum Relapse Records, 2001
7.5/10
Amorphis - Am Universum - cover art The rock/metal hybrid Amorphis has now finished the work on their fifth full-length album and they are faithful to the "Tuonela" sound. The Finnish band started out as a rather traditional death metal outfit in 1990 but they have then strayed from their old sound to become more of a heavy rock band. They are certainly not afraid of experimenting and on their new album we can even hear saxophones on a couple of songs. This is nothing completely new in the metal world (Carpathian Forest had saxophones on "Strange Old Brew") but it shows a band with ambition and a will to explore new musical areas. Some people may think Amorphis has become to soft to even be called a metal band but in my opinion they are still quite heavy at times and still capable of producing high quality music. This is the band´s saddest and most melancholic album so far but most importantly the beautiful melodies can still be found. No matter how many good things I could say about this album the kind of psychedelic rock Amorphis has begun playing doesn´t really appeal to me that much. Musically it is a very well-composed work of art but unfortunately it´s not my style. Maybe if I´m in the right mood but that mood rarely comes by. The album was recorded at Finnvox in Helsinki and produced by Simon Efemy.
