REVIEW: Amorphis - My Kantele (EP) Relapse Records, 1997
9/10
Amorphis - My Kantele (EP) - cover art When I initially decided to review the "My Kantele" EP by Amorphis I didn’t know what I could possibly say about it that wouldn’t be otherwise characteristic to the band (asides from the fact that it’s not death metal). Then I rewinded, pushed play once more, and it all came to me. There isn’t a record I’ve listened to by them that had more game in it than this one. Amorphis takes a step towards a more gentle kind of music on this record in spite of the story captured. The playfulness, need for melody, need for rhythm is what best describes the EP. First track is the accoustic "My Kantele" with very Amorphis kind of melody and orchestration only in its more gentle form. The only growls are to be heard on "And I Hear Your Call", last song on the tracklist and they aren’t that angry or evil as we are used to hearing from them on other projects. Calm, melodic solos are to be found all over, and commercial, electro kind of synth is also present on most tracks. Despite the new ground Amorphis had covered with the release of "My Kantele", I’m sure all metal fans could find this record more than pleasing. I couldn’t say that there are weak songs on the EP, instead I would say that every one of the compositions is well placed and has its good porpouse in the unity of the whole. There are only 5 songs included on this CD, wich only goes to prove that quality over quantity is what these guys stand for. The highlighted compositions would be "The Lost Son" with its progressive melodies and beautiful arrangements, the most playful "Levitation" with its rock n’ roll attitude and finally the harmonic-disharmonic art called "And I Hear Your Call". In conclusion, progressive melodies, a sometimes playful and sometimes melodic attitude is reflected on one of the most interesting creations by Amorphis wich bares the name of "My Kantele".
