So everyone probably already knows this album and its incredible quality, but I figure it might as well go on record for newcomers and whatnot. Amorphis was one of the forerunning death metal bands, and this album is the embodiment of every reason why they command the respect that they do. Their particular breed of death metal was still developing during these two albums, and they were beginning to embrace their own mellow approach to metal. Classic guitar riffs churn while the clean and death vocals mix wonderfully to create a truly unique sound and atmosphere. The lyrics themselves are even interesting. Those of "Black Winter Day" weave an interesting story, which is something far too many metal bands either fail or neglect to accomplish. In this case, the lyrics are taken from a classic Finnish epic that hereby deserves credit, the Kalevala. There is no lack of keyboards either. The keyboard parts work perfectly with the blend of death and doom guitar riffs the band hypnotically produces. This album is a must have for anyone that doesn’t already have it. It’s one of those albums that won’t be leaving your stereo for quite some time after you first put it in.
