REVIEW: Anael - Necromantic Rituals Barbarian Wrath, 2003
7/10
Anael - Necromantic Rituals - cover art If I’m not wrong this should be black / doom? The most odd of all music labels, cursed and hated. Perhaps that slowness helps to underline malice? Otherwise an album with this much hate should be 200 bps at least. "Necromantic Rituals" is the debut album from Anael which they made after maturing their sound on a few 7" Eps and one split album. Here we have eleven songs that mostly look alike. The music is slow with dominant guitar that curses slowly. It all reminds me a little bit of New York's own Winter, although I’m not that competent to speak about doom metal as my faves are Marduk and Dark Funeral. Guitar riffs, together with vocals build the backbone of the album. They give all the diversity of the album. Anael are very committed to slow playing and they only make a few attempts on the entire album to speed things up, even a little bit. That might be my main objective, tempo is the same flatline on entire album. It doesn’t speed up, nor does it slow down, with only a few exceptions. It does become monotonous for me. Lyrics are very pro evil oriented with Lucifer being the focus and source of inspiration. Production is half way good. I guess they wanted it this way, raw sounding with hall effect on voice.
