Since its creation in 1990 the entity known as Anathema has amazed a whole world with their music. They have also been a band set in steady evolution, from their pioneering early works in the death / doom genre to the emotional electronic pop rock of today. After having been one of the two most important bands for the British label Peaceville Records together with My Dying Bride they have now left for their new label Music For Nations, a home probably better suited for their new more modern sound. I have always been a huge fan of My Dying Bride but unlike them Paradise Lost and Anathema have never been able to get to me in the same way with their older works. That is one of the reasons why I am glad to see this kind of evolution with these two bands. I would be very disappointed if My Dying Bride went in that direction as they are masters of their art. "A Natural Disaster", the newest offering in a long row of Anathema releases, displays everything the band is about - the strong melancholic vibe, the subtle melodies and the emotional vocals, this time sometimes coming with distortion. On this album Anathema show us that they are not afraid to experiment and in my opinion "A Natural Disaster" bear the fruits of a highly successful experiment. If you would not mind a softer version of present day Katatonia then this album is for you.
