REVIEW: Anathema - The Silent Enigma Peaceville Records, 1995
6.5/10
Anathema - The Silent Enigma - cover art Nine sad stories of a tormented soul's voyage through a life filled with agony and pain - in short that's what this album by one of the top English doom metal bands is all about. Musically it sounds a little like My Dying Bride (same label and country...) with some influences from bands like Paradise Lost and Cradle of Filth although I don't find it to reach the same high quality of the My Dying Bride albums. The music consists mostly of slow heavy guitar melodies fortified with drums and bass and accompanied by vocals somewhere between death and classic metal, sometimes also spoken parts. On "Alone" you can also hear female vocals done by Rebecca Wilson. The lyrics are sad and emotional and in my opinion better than the music itself on this album. If you like bands like Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride this might be worth buying, but I advice you to listen to it before doing so. The album has got it's bright moments but they are unfortunately not too many. At least the album has a very beautiful cover picture, a painting called "Lady In Milton's Comus" by J. Wright. The tracks on this album were recorded at Lynx Studios, Newcastle, engineered by Kev Ridley and produced by the band together with Hammy from Peaceville.
