REVIEW: Ancestral Legacy - Emptiness Self-financed, 2002
6.5/10
Ancestral Legacy - Emptiness - cover art In late 1995 Eddie Risdal (vocals, guitars, bass, drum programming) and Kjell-Ivar Aarli (bass, vocals) formed a band named Permafrost and they were influenced by bands like Dissection, Ulver, In Flames, Unanimated etc. In 1998 the keyboard player Øyvind Rosseland joined the band and they changed not only their name to Ancestral Legacy, but also their musical direction to synth-based influenced as well by late Dimmu Borgir, Kovenant, Cradle Of Filth.

This release is their second demo and includes songs from both periods. Five of them were new and the rest ones re-recordings. "Emptiness" begins with an Intro, which could easily be omitted since it offers nothing to the release. Songs like "Where There's No Tomorrow" and "Emptiness" seem to belong in the first period. Their style is something between Norwegian Black Metal (but not extreme) and early Melodic Swedish Death Metal. Even from their first steps Ancestral Legacy have structured songs, pleasant aggressive flow, sense of rhythm and some interesting melodies but the final result sounds a bit primitive and raw since their talent hasn't been satisfactory evolved.

"Whispering Voices" and "Posessed" should be typical of Rosseland influence because they resemble Dimmu Borgir especially at keyboards and drums. Although synths give another prospective to the songs (transformation), however the final result misses something because apart from being good DB style performers (this is something of course because it requires a minimum level of musical abilities), their personal elements and innovation are limited. "Solitary Soul" and especially "Ringer Of Death" are more Cradle of Filth influenced, more aggressive and I could say have "more personality". This is of course a matter of subjective taste. "Valley Of Unrest" distinguishes and according to my personal opinion is the best song of the release. Nice rhythm, aggressive melodies, solid structure, everything in good proportion.

Unfortunately "Cross The Sea" is the worst song mainly due to its long duration, slower and monotonous tempo. In general this first release of Ancestral Legacy sounds "sympathetic" without any significant elevations. It gives a first sample of their music abilities, that unfortunately here are "locked" but will unfold at a great extent at the next releases.
