REVIEW: Ancestral Legacy - Goodbye Reality Self-financed, 2004
8/10
Ancestral Legacy - Goodbye Reality - cover art After having released "Of Magic Illusions" in April 2003, Ancestral Legacy played at the "Kjellerrock Festival" in Kristiansand in December 2003 and won the first prize among 25 participants. The prize was free studio time at Lynor studios, where "Goodbye Reality" was recorded in March 2004. Meanwhile Anton Dead at bass joined the new line-up shortly after "Of Magic Illusions". With "Goodbye Reality" the band says "Good Morning to Success" because their value has started to be widely recognized since they participate to big Festivals like "by:Larm 2005" featuring famous Norwegian bands. This release contains 2 new songs and 2 versions (one studio and one played live) of the masterpiece "Crash Of Silence" from the "Of Magic Illusions". I can't distinguish any song since all are of high standards. Musically speaking they have done a big progress, since the composition level has been launched. The first impression that one might form after having listened this release is that we have to do with the "Norwegian (early) Gathering". However things are more complicated because they have more influences as mentioned in the previous releases. Of course they keep their own personality and after having changed various musical styles, they found the one that better fits them. Gothic Metal influences are more obvious and frequent than before, equalizing the Atmospheric Death Metal elements, which binds perfectly with the perfect vocals of Elin Anita Omholt. I think if this solid Death Metal background was missed, the band would loose a lot from their composition level and they would sound like nowadays Gathering. The main weapon of this release is the well-structured, solid compositions. They step well on their music pathways and the most important they cause to the listener "nice" gloomy atmospheric feelings. If they continue like this (and have the right support of course), they will soon become a great and famous band. My only reservation is if they can maintain the same high level in a full-length release.
