Great changes for the Norwegians Ancestral Legacy between the previous release "Emptiness" and this one. Rosseland and Aarli (after a car accident) left the band. Eddie Risdal, the only remaining original member used the opportunity to change musical style by using songs he had written parallel to Ancestral Legacy that actually were intended for a solo project. The new members were Børre Iversen (drums), Tor Arvid Larsen (guitars), Elin Anita Omholt (clean vocals). The new line-up was completed in early 2003 and around these days they recorded their third demo "Of Magic Illusions". Despite the new members entrance, Eddie Risdal is the main composer and at this release he took in charge of the guitar, bass, vocals and synths (anything else?).
The pre-mentioned changes resulted in changing the musical style, which is more gothic oriented. However the main Melodic Death Metal core remains in many songs. Some of their influences are: Opeth, Lacuna Coil, Novembre, Katatonia, Rapture, early Theatre Of Tragedy (mainly due to the alternation of Eddie's Death Metal vocals with Elin's clean ones) and early (luckily) Gathering. Elin's vocals resemble a great deal to Gathering’s Anneke Van Giersbergen).
Apart from the first song, which is an Intro (much better than the respective of "Emptiness"), all others last more than 6 minutes. Their main characteristic is the change of rhythm. Some songs begin with a main theme, which at most of the cases is good enough, well structured, but nothing extremely special. Suddenly somewhere in the middle or later, the rhythm changes, the song goes faster and this "revitalization" keeps the interest of the listener. But until this point songs could have been from boring till good. Typical examples of this are: "Self-Enslavement", "Of Magic Illusions", "Forsaken". Additionally I could say about "Self-Enslavement" that it begins with a fast, aggressive but not so exciting theme which lasts 6 minutes and after the rhythm change it the last 2 minutes become much more interesting. Concerning "Of Magic Illusions" I could distinguish the bass playing and the gothic guitars after the change which give a sense of agony. "When Sense Dies" is a sympathetic song but may be the weakest of the release. While "Separate Worlds" is an interesting song, whose main theme is aggressive, brisk and vivid with some changes in between. The ideal outrider for "Crash Of Silence", which according to my opinion is by difference the best song of the release, a small masterpiece. A fully inspired composition at which Elin's ethereal vocals creates a unique atmosphere. "Forsaken" begins a bit boring but due the changes around the 2nd and 3rd minute the song gains a completely different bright prospect. Finally "The Silent Season" begins with an aggressive but not so inspired Death Metal theme and somewhere the 2:30 minute (I feel like describing a football game!), the pace slows down, Elin "enters" and guitars become interesting since they are influenced even by nostalgic old melodies of the 70ties. The song is blank between the 7'-11' and after this there is an Outro with violin samples. Ancestral Legacy have changed style in his release and have been improved. Personally I think at this new direction don't fit so well the fast speeds, which are necessary for variety. The band yields better at mid tempo (this is shown better at the next release) and its main weapon is the change of rhythm and vocals.
Note: This is the self produced demo version.. The Russian label Magik Art will reprint it with bonus material which will be a cover song (the track "Enveloped" by the Finnish band Rapture) + 3 of the songs from the "Emptiness" demo.
