REVIEW: Ancestral Rhymes - The Cosmic Law self-released, 2008
7.5/10
Ancestral Rhymes - The Cosmic Law - cover art Wrong on so many levels, this compressed, out-of-sync, confused Hellenic metal oddity shouldn’t work at all. Its muddy, flat recording sounds like ambitious basement black metal, which is, in fact, one of the aesthetic components here. Throw in some full-on ‘70s prog, ambient/darkwave, epic film scoring and a lot of wayward oddities and we’re almost home. Add some real drums, always a saving grace for studio-only concerns. Now, take away a few points for said drumming being some of the clumsiest I’ve heard in ages, off-time crashes and misguided fills. Three metal/rock tracks, three orchestrated interludes...wrong, just wrong. Now, wait for it...this is pretty durn good. For starters, it doesn’t sound like anyone else. You can grasp at the likes of Limbonic Art, Primordial or Tangerine Dream, but it doesn’t really capture the full realm of possibilities that this two-piece band willfully and sometimes clumsily explores. Second, even though I can sit back pointing at all the bizarre choices, I never escape the feeling that this is heady, inspired, artful stuff made by a couple of folks with interesting things to say. If they can get something down on tape or hard drive with a bit more polish and snap to it, I could see them garnering my fealty.
