REVIEW: Ancient - The Halls Of Eternity Metal Blade Records, 1999
6.5/10
Ancient - The Halls Of Eternity - cover art Aphazel, band leader and main composer of Ancient, seems to be a rather restless soul since he has been living in Norway, then USA and now finally in Italy where he found the beautiful yet Deadly Kristin. Ancient is one of those black metal bands powered by thick atmospheric keyboard layers, an evil atmosphere and a seductive female voice. This works out fairly well here and there but unfortunately most of the songs on this album leave behind them nothing but a sad trace of indifference that is hard to ignore. The bestial screams from Aphazel's throat don't exactly do much to change the impression and neither do the destructive hammering from Krigse. There are a few shining glimpses of joy where you briefly feel like you will finally be saved from the boredom like the nice keyboards on the first couple of tracks (they quickly grow old...) and the fine rhythm section on "Cosmic Exile". This doesn't last long though and the only great track on the album is the groovy "I, Madman" which brings to mind the Black Sabbath classic "Iron Man". The relocation to Italy was not a very bright career move because the production is not what must be expected from a Metal Blade release. The vocals and keyboards sound good, the drums are ok but the guitar sound is far from satisfying. This album is not really bad, just not worth buying unless you're dying to get that one good song.
