REVIEW: Angel Blake - Angel Blake Metal Blade Records, 2006
7.5/10
Angel Blake - Angel Blake - cover art When The Crown split up guitarist Marko Tervonen still had some Metal coursing through his veins. The result of this newfound blood is Angel Blake, a musical beast vastly different from damn near anything put out by Marko's former band. Actually claiming the band's name from a Danzig song, Angel Blake the band has more Hard Rock going on than anything else, though the overall sound is dense and distinctly Metal still. The man himself says the band is "influenced and inspired by bands [such] as Metallica, Paradise Lost, Danzig, [and] Sentenced" and these ring true for certain eras for particular bands. The sound of Monster Magnet creeps in there, too, definitely adding to the big Rock 'n' Roll vibe. Vocalist Tony Jelencovich (ex-Transport League) was essentially handpicked for this project and he brings a lot to the table. The press release indicates this band to be all about "heavy melancholic songs with catchy hooks" and that is pretty accurate. Marko handles all on the album except vocals and does a great job. Listeners who enjoy the "black album," Draconian Times, and the terminal era of Sentenced, in addition to Danzig should find a lot to dig. Check 'em out from our friends at Metal Blade records. "The death of the old is the birth of the new!" says Marko. So how does it feel to be alive, to borrow a lyric from the record? It must feel like a lot of fun. Rock on, folks. \m/

Bonus round: the Rolling Stones cover is good times and could be a radio hit. Y'know, if radio was still worth a damn in the U.S.
