Straight from the press release: "The bar for heavy music just got a lot higher -- and a lot younger." This might very well be San Francisco's answer to Poland's Decapitated, at least in terms of brutality and youth. And maybe this is what Napalm Death had in mind when they penned "Suffer the Children." Regardless, it is veritably difficult to fathom that this band is comprised of 18 and 19 year olds. Seriously. Unbelievable, really.
Animosity's sophomore effort completely bypasses the slump and simply shreds from the opening salvo of "Thieves" all the way through its closing moments on the aptly titled "Shut it Down." Strangely enough, "Shut It Down" is the name of the band's independent debut from 2003 on Tribunal Records. These guys have primarily flown under the radar since they were too young to drive (i.e., 16 and under) but that makes this album all the more impressive.
As to the music, a few Hardcore breakdowns and gang-shouted choruses are present in addition to some almost Lamb of God Thrash moments, a bit of Suffocation worship, and a few Zakk Wylde squeals, and all of this sounds great to these seasoned ears. By and large this is as brutal as it gets. The potent mix of Death, Grind, and Hardcore courtesy of Misery Index (who are thanked in the liner notes) may be the closest overall comparison that can be made to Animosity, though these youths from 49er-ville could easily surpass that band.
In summary, it is very nice to see a young band not into make-up, baggy pants, image, Emo, or Adam goddamn Dutkiewicz. That these gentlemen all very ably -- and savagely -- play their instruments, including a throat, is absolutely killer. This is a band with a very bright future. I expect even bigger things from Animosity and so should you. Yes, even you. [Minus 0.5 for brevity, though if this album were any longer, it might kill you.]
