Ankhara is a Spanish metal band who have been
around since 1995 and released two full-length albums prior to this one. The
title of this album, "Sombras Del Pasado", means something like songs from
the past I believe. Many Spanish bands remain rather unknown to the general
metal crowds because of the fact that they only use Spanish lyrics and this is
also the case with Ankhara. Nonetheless the metal scene in Spain is very
strong and even though Ankhara are not as big as Tierra Santa they have a lot
of fans in their home country already. This is the first time I hear any of
their music and what I was to listen to when I sat down with this album was a
mix of heavy, power and progressive metal. There are lots of guitar solos and
it seems as if these guys are highly skilled musicians. Unfortunately they are
not quite as good when it comes to writing interesting songs. The most
interesting element of their music is their use of keyboards which adds at
least some extra spark to some of the songs. One or two songs seem to end a
little strange but I guess that is only being progressive... The Iced
Earth-like drumming also tend to sound a little monotonous at times. The
vocalist does a decent job, no more, no less. Sometimes he sounds like In
Extremo while at other times he uses a more traditional power / heavy metal
vocal style. Ankhara is a band that consists of talented musicians but they
still need something more to take them to the next
level.
