REVIEW: Annihilator - Waking The Fury Steamhammer Records, 2002
9/10
Annihilator - Waking The Fury - cover art Annihilator is one of the biggest thrash metal bands ever to rise from the North American continent and their last album "Carnival Diablos" only made me like them even more than before. With this new album they have focused more on the aggressive side of their music which results in "Waking The Fury" being perhaps the most extreme and harsh Annihilator album so far. All the classic trademarks of the band have still been kept though which makes me very happy and the vocals from the rather newly recruited Joe Comeau are very good indeed. It's nice to see that classic thrash metal is not ready to die when the nu-metal wave have crushed a lot of the old scene. I'm not saying that nu-metal is bad, I really like some of the bands, but it's a shame that the majority of people so easily embrace everything that's new and not caring too much about what has been. Music never gets better, it only changes but this is something people find hard to understand these days. These Canadians are some of the finest metal musicians in the world and if you are a fan of the band I don't think you will be disappointed this time either. There are perhaps no big hit songs like on the last album but the overall quality is much higher than most releases.
