The Canadians
in Anvil never seem to give up. It has now been twenty years since they
released their debut album Hard 'n' Heavy and this is their eleventh
full-length so far. Fans of old style classic heavy metal in the vein of
Manowar, Black Sabbath and others may have a good time with this album but to
me their thrashy heavy metal seems a bit outworn and gets boring after two or
three songs. Not that the music is bad in any way, Anvil is still a band of
very talented guys that have been in the business for a very long time. As a
live act on a festival or as party music this might suit very well but just
playing the cd does not bring out anything special. I know that Anvil has
gathered a lot of fans out there in the past 20 years and as I´ve said the
music is not that bad. Just give it a listen before deciding on buying it
would be my advice to you. A couple of tracks like "Plenty Of Power" and
"Computer Drone" are really great but other than those the album is a little
plain with edgeless songs. Perhaps it's time for Anvil to retire once and for
all, twenty years is a long time... If you like softer but still heavy metal
in the old 80's style give this a shot but otherwise leave it be and you'll
be a happier human being.
