REVIEW: Anvil - Still Going Strong Massacre Records, 2002
7.5/10
Anvil - Still Going Strong - cover art The Canadian band Anvil have been around for ages it seems now, or at least since 1978, and even though their earlier albums are looked upon with great respect by many older generation heavy metal fans they have never really become any favorites of mine. My opinion doesn't change that much with this album although I must say that it is more interesting than their previous one which was a little bit premature I think. Not only the basic traditional heavy metal riffing have been put to use here but also exciting and gripping song structures. Vocalist and founding member Lips are doing a pretty good job on this album as well. The track "Holy Wood" still shows the same common metal naivity of which I am not very fond. This is definitely one of the wordt songs of the album, musically, lyrically and vocally. It is simply boring and foolish with the title stolen from Marilyn Manson? Nothing amazing but a good solid album that should please fans of 80s heavy metal. If you're a drummer you should also check the impressive drum solo in "White Rhino". Stand-out tracks: "In Hell", "Waiting", "What I’m About", "Defiant".
