Apostasy is a Swedish band that has been around for some years now but now the time has come for their debut album entitled "Cell666". This may very well be the first chapter in the Apostasy story but it is not the first time we get to hear the music found on this album which sounds all too familiar from beginning to end. The band doesn't try to hide their musical influences and nor does the label. Early to mid-period Dimmu Borgir and early Cradle Of Filth have doubtless been important guides in this band's road to album number one. "Cell666" is a highly melodic album and the keyboards play a very important role in a similar way as they did for Dimmu Borgir earlier on. Today Dimmu Borgir have moved away from that slightly and became more extreme but Apostasy unfortunately sounds rather thin compared to their Norwegian heroes. From time to time it sounds pretty good such as the vocal parts of "7th Throne" but the problem is that nothing sticks out. It's the same guitar melodies, vocals and keyboards throughout the entire album. The guys are definitely not bad musicians, they just don't have the song writing talents needed to compose a memorable album. As background music it's ok but other than that it sounds too much like Dimmu Borgir leftover material. Black Mark are trying to ride the wave of success formed by other bands but unfortunately that doesn't work in the long run. I do hope that Apostasy will mature in the future though and find something of their own.
