REVIEW: April Ethereal - Advent Conquer Records, 2001
9/10
April Ethereal - Advent - cover art Wow! I can't say anything but wow when hearing this debut album from the Polish death metal band April Ethereal who used to go under the name Leon until the year 2000 when they decided to change to the current one. They are actually the first Polish band who have impressed me this much and I have to say that they even outdo the mighty Vader in my eyes (or in my ears would perhaps be more suitable since I prefer girls...). The music of April Ethereal is basically keyboard enhanced and very atmospheric death metal with brutal vocals but still also with a feeling of beauty that is hard to describe. Progressive dark metal is their own label on the music but I would prefer to call it atmospheric death metal. Nocturnus were perhaps the first death metal band who successfully incorporated keyboards in their music but during the 90's there have been a great number of acts who have taken advantage of the new technology. I haven't still heard anything like what April Ethereal have done here though. Intense, brutal, beautiful are the only things I have to say about this release which is definitely one of the best debut albums of last year. Polish death metal has now been given a new face and I urge you all to check this new band out.
