REVIEW: Arachnes - Parallel Worlds Scarlet Records, 2001
8/10
Arachnes - Parallel Worlds - cover art Arachnes is actually a very old Italian band and they started their career already in 1987 with the album "Labyrinth" but at this time they were known as Firehouse. Arachnes is in fact a walking example of music history. A lot of people might want to call them a power metal band but they have so much more to show the world than most conventional bands of the genre. Influences from classical hard rock/heavy metal bands like Deep Purple and Rainbow are not difficult to discern. The band also holds classical composers like Chopin and Bach as their heroes, a fact that unfolds itself in a couple of beautiful piano melodies (among them the prelude) and also the song structures. The band is built around the two brothers Franco and Enzo Caruso and these two guys are by now highly skilled and experienced musicians with many years of training behind them, something clearly shown on every single track on the album. The vocals are mostly of the usual power metal kind but there are also some of the more rocking kind. The chorus of one of the early tracks actually sounds extremely much like one by Vision Divine (the solo project of Fabio Lione of Rhapsody). Apart from that they don´t really show any close relation to that band. Their music is thicker, heavier and more complex which also are the keywords to describe this album. Arachnes is definitely one of the most exciting Italian bands at the moment.
