REVIEW: Arcanum XIII - Evolution Requires Death Self-financed, 2001
5/10
Arcanum XIII - Evolution Requires Death - cover art Arcanum XIII is a new band from Brazil that features several members who used to be in Serpent Rises. When seeing the album cover, lyrics and song titles for this album I expected either a black metal or a death metal band but I was a little surprised to say the least when listening to the music. This is a weird mix of orchestral music, piano melodies, spoken verse and lousy pop ballads that will probably not be appreciated by many metal fans. These guys are probably good musicians but this kind of music I just can't learn to appreciate no matter how hard I try. The band has stated that their new material is to be more aggressive and with the incorporation of black metal parts they hope to gain more attention in the metal world. I can only hope for the best and perhaps their next release will be a bit more daring because this one is really boring. Some of the orchestral parts sound pretty good though and perhaps black metal is what they are most suited for. Let's just wait and see what they are capable of in the future.
