The Swedes (and German) of
Arch Enemy was nominated to win "Best Underground Act" at the Metal Hammer
awards which took place in London on June 3rd this year. I would hardly call
Arch Enemy an underground act today but that just shows what kind of a
magazine Metal Hammer really is. "Anthems Of Rebellion" is the second album
from the band to feature the new female growler Angela Gossow who have
probably gained the band some new bands, both because of her voice but of
course also some because of her looks. Even if the band members would deny it
themselves the latter was no doubt one of the reasons why she was chosen to be
the band's new vocalist to replace Johan Liiva who apparently could not
satisfy the band's demands any longer. No matter what your opinion is on this
matter Angela is much more than just looks. She is easily one of the finest
female vocalists on the metal scene today and this is something she definitely
shows on their new album. She roars with much more comfort and strength then
most men and I must admit that she is doing her job better than Liiva did back
in the old days. She has risen from obscurity to "stardom" in no time at all
but she deserves it unlike many others. "Anthems Of Rebellion" is a typical
Arch Enemy album with the twin guitar attack from the Amott brothers doing
most of the the hard work. There is really not much to say about the album. It
is very coherent with no tracks clearly sticking out from the others. If you
enjoyed "Wages Of Sin" you will not be disappointed unless you expected
major progress. However, the previous release was more impressive in my
opinion.
