REVIEW: Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors Ad Astra Enterprises, 2002
9/10
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors - cover art I always like bands that give us more than what we're used to. Such is the case for this Norwegian band. Their type of music is truly progressive and goes well into the Avant-garde style and beyond! If there's people out there hooked on the prog scene of the seventies complaining about today's music, well stop being crabby and get a copy of some Avant-garde band because you'll see that the progressive flame is still burning. This type of music can only be considered as a brilliant mix of different styles combined in a very aesthetic and entertaining way. Even in some regards, the vocal parts are quite weird and theatrical. Maybe you'd say to yourself that this doesn't make sense but believe me it does. The only thing you need is to be open minded and ready to discover what's over the rainbow. After all, music like any other art is based on one thing: creativity. The imagination of these artists is bubbling with new sounds and musical phrases. But don't worry for the meat because the infernal trio of guitar, bass, drum is still hot! It's just deliciously spiced with electronic elements. The keyboards are playing a big part in the soundscapes and can give either a classical, spaced out of, shall I say, completely whacky sound to the compositions. The singer's voice remind me of Greg Lake from the famous ELP trio. As it is expected, be prepared for the unexpected. The pieces are different from one another and this evolution can be found in each song too. Just like humanity that went from caveman to high tech space conquistador. More familiar parts can also be tasted here such as strong and rumbling bass and drums forming a tight rhythmic section. "Collapse Generation" and "Radical Out" are a good demonstration of highly powerful tunes. A neo-classical piece can be considered "Star-Crossed" with its piano flight. But wait till the mood changes...."For The End Yet Again" is a pretty twisted creation including all the elements mentioned above. That's Avant-garde and I love it!
