REVIEW: Arkhon Infaustus - Filth Catalyst Osmose Productions, 2003
8.5/10
Arkhon Infaustus - Filth Catalyst - cover art If France ever wants to dispel the ridiculous notion of "Freedom Fries", cease their being the brunt of jokes by the US Secretary of Defense and generally gain global respect, they'd be well-advised to have Arkhon Infaustus become ambassadors. Their second full-length and follow up to 2000's "Hell Injection" is the epitome of extreme metal, complete with shocking yet honest imagery. "Words of Flesh" is driven by a furious tempo, and given a listenable factor by the always catchy riffing of D.Deviant and Toxik.H, the former of which also combines vocals with bassist/frontman 666Torturer to keep the sound fresh with constant yet well-placed high/low variations. Arkhon Infaustus' mastery of musically relevant feedback comes back in fine form on the following track; this is a trait that few bands appreciate or utilize, and one that I find quite enjoyable. "The Fifth Inquisitor" is a dynamic song with raging war beats surmounted by a lethargic and rotten melody of the Immolation variety. If asked to choose a favorite from the 8 offered on "Filth Catalyst", "Criminal Deities" would likely be the one, as it seemed to best exemplify the eclectic and savage appeal which this French quartet have so professionally developed. One of the best albums this year.
