REVIEW: Ars Nova - The Goddess Of Darkness Musea Records, 1996
9.5/10
Ars Nova - The Goddess Of Darkness - cover art I got to know this band via Ayreon's "Flight Of The Migrator" album. Keiko Kumagai was a guest keyboard player on it. She's the one composing all the good stuff that Ars Nova is playing. What we have here can be considered as the Japanese version of the Spice Girls. Oh my god! Did I say that? Did I say THAT!!! I'm doomed... Seriously, these girls are no pussycats. Quite the contrary, they're some kind of devil's mistresses lead by a mighty witch. Mr. Devil must be in a very good mood with Kyoko Kanazawa on bass and Akiko Takahashi on drums as mistresses because they formed quite a dynamic duo! So here is an awesome instrumental recording made of five tracks and the compositions are all very energetic, progressive, breathtaking and keyboards driven a bit like ELP at their prime. "Kali" is an intricate piece mixing different type of keys like synths, piano, hammond organ, forming walls of majestic keyboards. If you're like me very fond of hammond sound, well this album have many partitions using this magical instrument. Also sudden shifts of speed and mood will keep the suspense high. These tiny girls can realy get the place shakin'. "Fury" is a short follow up but it's nothing short of excitement with its tornado of sounds and symphonic interludes of piano and on the other side, a solo that sounds like a real fuzzy guitar. "Morgan" begins like a lullaby with spacey key works before the progressive nightmare showing classical influence settles in. Another short but not sweet number follow on spot number four. "Isis" has an intro that would suit very well for a horror movie but this piece actually turns out to be quite an Avant-gardiste pleasure. Last but not least, "The Gorgons" has a symphonic intro, mighty keys, forming a thunderstorm of notes over a complex musical structure in constant evolution. If I was to describe this album in one word, I would say: "Brilliant". But who needs words when music speaks by itself so well?
