REVIEW: Arsis - A Diamond For Disease Willowtip Records, 2005
8.5/10
Arsis - A Diamond For Disease - cover art From the official press release: "While writing for their sophomore album, James Malone was approached by Ballet Deviare about possibly writing a track for their next ballet performance. Ballet Deviare had previously used an Arsis song in one of their performances but were requesting Arsis to write a song specifically for them to perform live with the ballet at their next showing. The song needed to be a minimum of ten minutes long and was to be the main piece in Ballet Deviare's next performance. Arsis accepted the challenge and ultimately the title track of this mini CD is the result." Holy crap. They've done it. Or rather, he's done it. Mr. Malone is back and is sicker than an asthmatic in a West Virginia coal mine who has pneumonia and wet clothes. Or something. That is to say he's got talent pouring out of his pores and can't help but get some of it on you. The title track is an epic ~13 minutes chock full of fantastic leads and killer riffs. The music is like Classical masterpieces of yore, replete with cyclical themes and returning motifs. The vocals are still of the higher pitched Death/Black Metal variety, though now more like Angela Gossow (prior to Doomsday Machine), and the drumming is as maniacal as ever, again courtesy of Michael Van Dyne. It's worth noting that mastering was handled by none other than James Murphy. I wonder if Trivium would bring these guys out on tour.... Regardless, the press release got it right: "A Diamond for Disease is an absolute swirling vortex of symphonic riff-o-rama." Even the Alice Cooper cover.
