REVIEW: Art Of Destruction - Under Attack (demo) Sinternational Records, 2003
3/10
Art Of Destruction - Under Attack (demo) - cover art I must say I expected more when I read the info about this band. After all, they have toured with bands like Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation and Mortician, just to name a few. My disappointment was complete. First of all, if I ever released an album like this (which I wouldn’t because I’m a perfectionist) I would be so ashamed of myself that I would just want to crawl into a hole and hide. Forever. In a studio you don’t have time to rehearse. It costs a lot of money, so you have to know your shit. It has to be so tight that you should be able to play it backwards if you have to. These guys created a few pointless tracks, didn’t bother to get it together and went in the studio and made crap. It sounds like everything has been recorded in a couple of hours with maybe one or two microphones. Of course, metalablums are supposed to sound like you’re playing in a garage, a little bit raw and so on, but come on! At least the music should be tight. That’s my first point. The second is of course the production. I keep on bitching about it, but it is an important bit, believe it or not. No one wants to hear your album if you can’t hear what the individual instruments are playing, if the production is crap and you can’t even judge if the songs are good because of the lame sound. Yes, demobands are allowed to have shitty recordings, but this band has already released an album and toured with death metal’s finest bands. So why??? Why do they do this to my poor ears??? First of all, it sounds like the input volumes weren’t set from the start, and the computer's just cut off signals that where too strong. What that means, in plain words, is that sometimes the snaredrum or a cymbal just gets cut off, in the middle of a beat. Second of all, the guitars are lame. Reeaaally lame. This band has only three members, one of them (of course) plays the guitar. But when you’re in a studio you can actually record more guitars to make it sound thicker. But I guess that didn’t cross their minds. And what’s with the robotsounding vocals? Why did they put robotdistortion on the vocals? Who uses robotdistortion? Seriously. The only thing that impressed me somewhat was the last song called “The blood you gave”. It’s a ballad with growl. A little bit original. But of course, since the instruments aren’t synchronized even that song gets fucked up. I will be glad for the rest of my life, if I never have to hear this four-track horror again. I think I’m just gonna burn it.
