Now that almost every character in the works
of Tolkien has been honored with his / her's own metal band we might finally
see some real band names in the future. Except for being a beautiful Tolkien
creation Arwen is also a Spanish band that formed in 1996. Today this
technical power metal band is quite unusual in its choice of line-up since
they consist of no less than eight young individuals, six male and two female
ones. Even though they have been working in the silent for several years now
it isn't until now that they have managed to sign a record deal with the
native label Arise Records and release their debut album "Memories Of A
Dream". This is a well produced and professional release that should gain
them some attention from power metal fans all over the world. Even though I
have no doubt that these young musicians are skilled when it comes to handling
their instruments there is something missing to lift the album. The songs are
good enough to be enjoyable but nothing more and the male vocalist
unfortunately sounds rather horrible when he tries to hit the high notes. The
female vocalist has a voice that is a little too weak for heavy metal singing
as well. She should try to gain some vocal strength or use her voice in a
different way as she does in "Once Upon A Time" where her performance is the
highlight of the entire song. Other than that the only piece that really
impressed me on this album was the beautiful classically inspired keyboard
intro. Not really a bad album but Arwen have failed to find an original sound
of their own. If you're a big fan of mellow symphonic power metal or a
Tolkien fanatic you might still want to give these guys and girls a
chance.
