When I first heard the debut album from the Danish sextet As We Fight I was blown away by their aggressive mixture of Scandinavian metal and hardcore. As a result my expectation regarding the second full-length from the band was quite high. A lot of things have changed and the previous album “Black Nails And Bloody Wrists” had a heavier and darker sound than the new release “Midnight Tornado”. The production has been improved but I was a little disappointed with “Midnight Tornado” since there is not enough variation in the material and the songs tend to blend into each other. This is metalcore with no surprises and instead of a kick in the head this feels more like a stroke on the cheek. The band are good musicians and the drumming is especially good on this record as well, but “As We Fight” need to work more on their song writing and add some edge and personality to their music. Don’t get me wrong, “Midnight Tornado” is not a bad album, just not as good as I expected. Fans of band such as As I Lay Dying should definitely check out As We Fight.
