REVIEW: Asgaroth - Redshift Abstract Emotions, 2002
7.5/10
Asgaroth - Redshift - cover art Ah, finally the new album of Asgaroth is out, and as we speak, the band told me they had been picked up by no-one else than Peaceville, so that should give you an idea of the capacities this Spanish band has. Asgaroth impressed me deeply with their mini-CD "Absence Spells Beyond" in 1999, being a catchy, yet progressive/symphonic form of black metal. On that mini, they even did a breathtaking cover of King Crimson's classic "Epitaph", and that is not easy to get away with! On "Redshift", Asgaroth goes harder at work. They've turned up the speed a little, made the sound more roaring, but still they maintain their symphonic and half-progressivity, doing alot of variations in the vocalwork, and also leaving in some choirs and clean performances. If to call this blackmetal or not, I am not sure of, as I prefer something like "symphonic dark metal", but in any case, Asgaroth has great capacities when it comes to performance and to outstanding songwriting. It is to be said that "Redshift" still is not a utter masterpiece like "Absence Spells Beyond" was, but who said it is easy to follow up a classic ? Asgaroth is in any case my favourite Spanish band at the moment, and I just wish for more... "Redshift" is also said to be re-released by Peaceville for that matter, but I guess it is still left for the planning stage.
