REVIEW: Astral Carneval - [demo] Self-financed, 2003
7/10
Astral Carneval - [demo] - cover art Astral Carneval began in the summer of 2001 but back then they were only doing Metallica covers. The real Astral Carneval was born one year later when the band members started taking what they were doing more seriously. Now the Eskilstuna, Sweden based band have evolved into a solid full-fledged thrash metal act, mixing old Bay area thrash in the Testament vein with more Swedish styled riffing that should appeal to fans of The Haunted, Soilwork, Carnal Forge and other modern death / thrash bands. Eskilstuna is probably best known as the home town of the progressive rock / metal band Pain Of Salvation but now they also have a quality thrash metal band to show. Astral Carneval are not presenting any groundbreaking material on this demo recording but it is well played, energetic and, most important of all, it never grows boring. The vocals are satisfactory but not out of the ordinary. I didn't expect to find a guitar solo in one of the songs but there it was. Astral Carneval are wise though and they have spared us from the showoffs of more technical guitarists. I truely appreciate talented guitarists but it can get a little bit too much sometimes. If you're in for a good old adrenalin rush this is a recommendable band for thrash fans. I particularly like the closing track "All You Ever Wanted" which is the most diverse song on the demo.
