REVIEW: Astral Demise - Heart To The Cosmos Self-financed, 2003
5/10
Astral Demise - Heart To The Cosmos - cover art Astral Demise is yet another one of those one-man black metal projects which are so common these days. This one is from the country of stars and stripes and is centered around an individual known as Phil (Eros-433) Almaraz who handles all instruments - screams, bass, keyboards, guitars and programming. One-man black metal projects normally don't impress me that much and neither did this one. There are no major flaws - the instruments are well handled and the song structures are thought out without stress and chaos. There are some problems though. First off there are no tracks that stand out from the rest and there is not enough going on in the songs. Secondly I am not too fond of his vocals which are a little bit too weak to be fully enjoyable as black metal. Third, the production is thin as it has been recorded at a home studio. Aside from this the music is at times suited for background entertainment while putting your mind to something else. It is not very violent nor melodic but instead the emphasis has been set on the atmosphere. I like the lyrical concept which is based on cosmology and astronomy (astronomy - not astrology!). Real-life lyrics is not something that usually doesn't come with a black metal album and this is something I appreciate. I like it when you dare to step outside boundaries set by anyone and create something of your own and in due time I might be able to enjoy the music of Astral Demise a little better. He just has to work a little harder on making the songs a bit more exciting.
