Everything has been said about classic heavy metal in various reviews, interviews and other articles already. Bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Dio, Metallica and Megadeath have more or less defined this genre but now, some 25 years after Metallica’s legendary “Master of Puppets” album - which has many times been voted best metal album of all times – there comes this band from Sweden: Astral Doors. After two full-length albums they released an EP at the end of 2005. What for? To please the fans of course! Seriously now, the EP features three tracks that have only been released on Japanese versions, one track from the upcoming album “Astralism” (release date: march 2006), one track that hasn’t been released so far and one video.
So what does the band sound like: I would say a mix of the aforementioned Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Dio, just with a fresher attitude. Singer Patrik Johansson’s voice also reminds me of Ozzy and Dio but with an annoying undertone. In my opinion he tries way too hard to make his voice sound powerful which it is anyway. Musically and technically speaking the band members definitely know what they’re doing but that alone doesn’t make a good album (or in this case EP). All 5 songs sound pretty much alike to me. They are solid old school metal, nothing more but nothing less either. So I only recommend this band to all the old school fans out there. Let’s see what the new album brings us.
