REVIEW: At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul Earache Records, 1995
9.5/10
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul - cover art At The Gates is a band that most of you probably already know of as one of the best death/thrash metal bands ever. As part of the NWOSDT (New Wave Of Swedish Death Metal) they play very fast changing and melodic music like other Swedish bands such as In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. The vocals are death style and very similar to early In Flames but a little thinner. "Slaughter of the Soul" contains 34 minutes of the best metal Sweden has had to offer. It´s tight, fast, aggressive and melodic with first class drumming and guitar work. The only thing that I don´t like about this album is that it´s exrtremely short. At The Gates consisted of some of the most talented musicians in Sweden but they have now departed with the Björler brothers forming the At The Gates copy The Haunted and the drummer Adrian Erlandsson now being with the No 1 black metal band in the world, Cradle of Filth. This is one of the classic albums of metal history and should be a part of every record collection. "Slaughter of the Soul" was recorded and mixed in Studio Fredman in Gothenburg May-July 1995 and mastered at Transfermation by Noel Summerville, produced by Fredrik Nordström and co-produced by the band. The lead guitar on "Cold" was played by Andy LaRocque from King Diamond.
