REVIEW: At The Gates - Terminal Spirit Disease Peaceville Records, 1994
8.5/10
At The Gates - Terminal Spirit Disease - cover art At The Gates is still by many regarded as the kings of the melodic death metal scene that Sweden has become so famous for. Even though their reign on Earth came to an abrupt end in 1996 their legacy still lives on with The Haunted, the new band of the Björler brothers. "Terminal Spirit Disease" is the third full-length album from the band but it's not an official full-length since it consists of only six new studio tracks and three live versions of older songs - "All Life Ends" from their first release, the "Gardens Of Grief" EP, "Kingdom Come" from "The Red In The Sky Is Ours" and "The Burning Darkness" from "With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness". The live tracks are very well done and even though the sound quality is surprisingly good they manage to capture at least some of the live atmosphere unlike many overproduced and boringly sterile live releases of today. The new tracks are the first to feature the new guitarist Martin Larsson but despite the fact that he is most certainly a skilled musician it doesn't make that much of a difference to the At The Gates sound which has always been built on the amazing musical talents of the Björler brothers. Of the new tracks the most impressing are "The Fevered Circle" and "The Beautiful Wound" which both share the wonderful At The Gates trademark - exciting guitar riffs and exquisite melodic hooks and, not to be forgotten, the anguished screams from Tomas Lindberg who uses more of hardcore vocals than the usual death growls, something that separates them from other bands like In Flames or Dark Tranquillity. Interesting to hear is also the cello and viola intro dirge played by Peter Andersson and Ylva Wåhlstedt respectively. Wåhlstedt also helped out In Flames on their "Lunar Strain" album. All of the six new tracks are as good as ever and I would probably have rated this album higher if the three live songs were replaced with another three new ones. A very nice lead-up to the magnificent "Slaughter Of The Soul" album.
