REVIEW: At Vance - Dragonchaser Shark Records, 2001
6.5/10
At Vance - Dragonchaser - cover art Judging from the title of this album most people would presume this to be power metal and they are absolutely right. The songs are telling stories about dragons, kings, warriors and the wars they´re fighting, lyrics that most power metal fans are used to hearing from their modern heroes. Being from Germany At Vance sounds very similar to a lot of other power metal bands from the country but perhaps they are a bit more emotional and slower-paced than the average. They haven´t got quite what it takes to join the first league yet but who knows what the future has to bring. Some of the songs are really good like the bombastic opener "Dragonchaser" and the beautiful ballad "My Bleeding Heart" but the more traditional power metal tracks often gets a little boring. There are a total of ten tracks on the album but only eight of them are written by the band themselves. The other two are surprisingly a metal/rock version of Beethoven's 5th Symphony and a cover version of Abba´s "The Winner Takes It All". Some bands like Rhapsody manage to make this kind of epic, spiritual power metal real interesting and alive but At Vance still has a few things to learn even though this isn´t really a fair comparison. Good music it is and fans of the genre could without a doubt find a way to enjoy this album.
