REVIEW: Atomizer - The Only Weapon Of Choice Agonia Records, 2004
7/10
Atomizer - The Only Weapon Of Choice - cover art The Australian metal scene was vivid in the early to mid 90s but then there was some kind of downward spiral that seemed to drain all life out of it. Now it feels as if it slowly being built up again with Hobb's Angel Of Death having returned and some great bands like Deströyer 666 and now Atomizer putting Australia back on the metal map. Warning 1: if you're purely a fan of modern sounding metal stop reading now. Warning 2: if metal scares you leave this website at once. This album has the subtitle "13 Odes To Power, Decimation And Conquest". War has always been the favorite lyrical subject among the many extreme metal bands produced by Australia so nothing about Atomizer will come as a surprise to those of you who are familiar with this scene. If you are not very familiar with it then maybe Atomizer will get you into it and start discovering more and more quality metal from this country. These thirteen songs are all very similar in structure, mixing standard riffs from black, thrash and heavy metal in a tasteful way. It isn't something unique but it's a bunch of songs that would make old fans of European styled thrash metal happy, at least if you don't mind it coming from an Australian band. Raw, primal, raging and thrashing madness that will keep your head in motion. Unfortunately the song writing doesn't hold up quite all the through and it feels a little bit repetitive towards the end of the album. A solid release though.
