REVIEW: Atreyu - A Death Grip On Yesterday Victory Records, 2006
7/10
Atreyu - A Death Grip On Yesterday - cover art "A Deathgrip On Yesterday" is the third outing from California's metalcore merchants Atreyu who have risen as one of the most prominent bands of their genre. In the ongoing war of words between true metal fans and straight-edge hardcore kids it is quite enjoyable to watch the ignorant youth from a spectators point of view. In my opinion music should not involve politics or personal propaganda of any kind. If you want to do some good then go make a difference within the system instead of pointing your finger at it from the outside. Enough said about that. Atreyu is not exactly expanding the musical spectrum further but stand steadily rooted in ground that has been marked before. Dual male vocals, one aggressive and one emo, melodic yet abrasive songs with influences ranging from metal to hardcore and modern American rock. Atreyu are unique in very few aspects but nonetheless they execute their art nicely and "A Death Grip On Yesterday" is an unusually ambient and versatile metalcore release with some subtle yet impressive guitar work that's rare to see in the genre.
